If you are nervous about putting your belongings in a storage unit because of theft or weathering, you really need to be concerned about pests. Rodents and insects can become a problem in storage units, especially if you haven't preserved your items properly.

Using a storage unit is a great way to keep your belongings safe and out of the way when you don't have room for them, without having to sell or get rid of anything. Here are a few things you'll want to consider to make sure your items will be in the same condition when you are ready to take them out of the unit, or that you're covered.

Sealable Plastic Containers

The sealable plastic containers aren't just going to prevent insects and rodents from smelling what it's in the unit, or getting into the containers, but it's also going to protect the items from dust, a water leak and humidity from condensation. You don't want pests chewing, clawing, or leaving waste on your items. Make sure you get durable plastic containers that have an air tight seal, and you may even want to put the items in plastic sealable bags before putting the items into the plastic containers.

Bug Repelling and Killing Products

Putting moth balls in your unit to deter bugs, along with aunt traps or other traps can help deter pests, and kill any pests that enter the space. These products can't guarantee that bugs aren't going to get into the unit, but they will make your unit less desirable and help manage some of the pest problems that could potentially arise.

Storage Insurance

Call the insurance provider that you use for other policies and get a cost to protect your items while they are in storage. This way if anything gets damaged, and not just by pets, you will have insurance coverage to replace the items or get them repaired. Get an assessment of the items in your unit, so you know what value your insurance policy needs to be.

Talk with each storage unit facility you are contemplating using to see what they do to help prevent pests from becoming a problem in their storage units, and to see if they offer any coverage for pests problems if they arise. Storing your items is a great way to keep them out of sight and out of mind when you don't have the space, just make sure the items are safe.
